El incendio comenzó el domingo por la tarde cerca de una comunidad al sur de la entrada al Parque Nacional Yosemite en California central y las autoridades evacuaron a un millar de vecinos, dijo la vocera de la policía del condado de Madera, Erica Stuart.
El Departamento de Bosques y Protección Antincendios de California (CalFire por su acrónimo en inglés) dijo que las llamas dañaron o destruyeron 21 estructuras. Según el periódico The Fresno Bee, un vecindario quedó gravemente afectado; varias casas fueron reducidas a cenizas y rescoldos ardientes.
"Esto es desgarrador", dijo al periódico el jefe de batallón de CalFire, Chris Christopherson. "La situación me enferma", apuntó. El incendio comenzó en un camino rural en las afueras de la comunidad de Oakhurst, ubicada en una cuesta al sur de la entrada que conduce al Parque Nacional Yosemite y se extendió hasta el Bass Lake.
Atizado por el viento, el incendio consumió cuando menos 129 hectáreas (320 acres), dijo el portavoz del CalFire, Daniel Berlant.
El fuego está contenido en un 20%.
La región del lago es un popular destino turístico durante todo el año. No había informes de que las llamas hubieran afectado el parque. Debido a la destrucción del fuego, el gobernador Jerry Brown busca recursos de la Agencia Federal de Gestión de Emergencias para cubrir el 75% del costo de combatir el incendio, dijeron funcionarios locales.
En el norte, 133 viviendas fueron evacuadas debido a un incendio registrado unos 96 kilómetros (60 millas) al este de Sacramento
Berlant dijo que el incendio comenzó el sábado en una zona remota, pero aumentó de intensidad el domingo cuando se extendió por la maleza gruesa y seca en un cañón.
En tanto, en el sur de California, fueron canceladas el domingo en la noche las órdenes de evacuación de 200 casas en el cañón Silverado, del condado Orange, porque los bomberos habían contenido el fuego en 50%.
Se espera que una ola de calor dure hasta el martes en el sur de California y está en efecto una advertencia de presencia de humo para partes de los condados Riverside y Orange.
