La partida de Umberto Eco tomó por sorpresa el mundo de las letras. Este viernes por la noche se conoció la noticia de su fallecimiento. De inmediato, las redes no se hicieron esperar y los mensajes recordando al ídolo de la semiótica fueron inminentes.

Eco nació el 5 de enero de 1932 en Alessandria, al este de Turín. Dijo alguna vez que la cultura del lugar fue una fuente de su "visión del mundo: el escepticismo y el disgusto por la retórica". Se graduó de la facultad de filosofía de la Universidad de Turín, donde adquirió su fascinación por la Edad Media y la estética del texto. Más adelante definió la semiótica como "una filosofía del lenguaje".
